2021 Porsche Taycan Turbo S vs. Tesla Model S Comparison

electric cars comparison

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is the top-of-the-line version of the upcoming electric four-seater. Its current specs put it just on par with last year’s Tesla Model S P100D when it comes to performance, but Porsche promises more. Let’s take a look.

Feature Comparison – Porsche Taycan S vs. Tesla Model S

Price:

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S will start at $185,000 and the Tesla Model S P100D starts at $134,500. That’s a difference of over $50,000 and while those that can afford both might not care about cost, for some it is important. For example, many people purchase their vehicles with financing and while the Taycan may be less expensive over time, it is more than 3x the initial cost.

Range:

Tesla Model S P100D does 335 miles per charge vs Porsche claims 315 miles for its top-of-the-line Turbo S model (290 miles for non-turbo). It’s a small difference but one that could play a role for those that want to drive from east to west coast and back.

Porsche says it will charge the Taycan Turbo S in 15 minutes on a DC fast charger when using an 800-volt charger (a technology that is not yet available). Tesla has its own network of Superchargers but few other EV owners have access to them.

Charging: While Tesla has its own proprietary charging network, Porsche will rely on third-party chargers. It is compatible with over 12,000 public charging stations in the US and over 150,000 charging stations worldwide according to Porsche.

One advantage of having hundreds of thousands of charging options is that if one charge point isn’t working or you just need a boost, there will be another option nearby.

Battery: With a 100 kWh battery pack, the Taycan Turbo S is similar in range and capacity to that of the Model S P100D but it does not have access to Tesla’s latest 100 kWh battery upgrade. Even so, with 310 kW peak power and an estimated 550 horsepower (similar to other Taycan versions), the Taycan Turbo S is no pushover.

Size: The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is similar in size to that of a BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class while the Model S P100D isn’t much bigger than a 3 Series (and smaller in both length and width than the Model X). It’s worth pointing out that both vehicles have room for 5 passengers, but with a 2+2 seating configuration, the Taycan is slightly more efficient.
