What is open and closed on Presidents Day 2020?

George Washington

The third Monday of every February is a time to remember presidents and, for some, enjoy a day off or take advantage of the sales at their favorite department store.

Presidents Day, known also as Washington’s Birthday, falls on Monday, Feb. 17 this year. The day is a federal holiday, which means many government institutions will be closed.

The day was originally established in the 1880s to honor President George Washington but later became viewed as a time to recognize all presidents, past and present after it was moved to a Monday as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act which took effect in 1971. The name then became widely known as Presidents Day.

Here are some key businesses that will and won’t be closed on Feb. 17:

Mail Services: Amazon, UPS, FedEx

The United States Postal Service will not deliver mail on Presidents Day. UPS will continue services. FedEx home delivery will be operational, but FedEx Express and FedEx SmartPost will have modified service.

According to an Amazon spokesperson, there are no shipping restrictions on Presidents Day. Delivery dates are listed in search results, product details pages, and at checkout so customers know when their items will arrive.

Is Presidents Day a bank holiday?

Most banks, including Federal Reserve Banks, will be closed. However, ATMs will still be available and TD Bank will be open.

Is there school on Presidents Day?

Most public schools will be closed to observe the federal holiday, and many private schools will do the same. Some schools might be in session to make up for weather-related cancellations.

Stock markets

The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets will be closed.

Garbage

Trash pickup will vary. Check with your local provider.

DMV

Department of Motor Vehicles offices across the U.S. will be closed. Some offices will be closed for the entire Presidents Day weekend, from Saturday, Feb. 15 through Monday Feb. 17. Check your local DMV’s website for more information.

Courts

Courts will not be in session. Some courts also observe Lincoln’s birthday and won’t be in session Wednesday, Feb. 12.
